Since opening in 1978, Knauf opened its North American insulation operations in Shelbyville, Indiana.
In 2001, Knauf partnered with, and then acquired the assets of Alcopor and has quickly grown into the world's fastest-growing insulation manufacturer in Europe. Knauf continued to expand its insulation manufacturing activities with the roll-out of new manufacturing sites across the Europe for both glass wool and stone wool insulation.
Today, Knauf Insulation has around 5000 employees in more than 50 countries around the world with 30 manufacturing sites for the production of glass wool, stone wool, wood wool, extruded polystyrene (XPS) and expanded polystyrene (EPS).

Knauf Insulation products have always been sustainable—made from sand, one of the world’s most abundant, renewable resources and a minimum of 40% post consumer recycled bottle glass collected from curbside recycling programs. And now, the addition of ECOSE Technology makes our products even more sustainable.
Increased Sustainability; Same Legendary Characteristics
ECOSE Technology is based on rapidly renewable bio-based materials rather than non-renewable petroleum-based chemicals traditionally used in fiberglass insulation product binders. It does not contain phenol, formaldehyde, acrylics or artificial colors; and reduces the binder embodied energy by up to 70% as compared to our previous products. ECOSE Technology reduces the expected Global Warming Potential and total embodied energy of EcoBatt Insulation by approximately 4%.
